Lesson 00 · Your first sketch

Primer · About

Primer began on a studio floor: one painter, one phone taped to a shelf and forty people who sent back photos of their paintings. It still works the same way — short lessons, a real project and a teacher who marks it.

The first storyboard wall, 2019

Our story

We still keep the notebook. These are the pages we come back to.

  1. 2019

    One teacher, one camera

Lena filmed a painting course on her studio floor with a phone taped to a shelf. Forty people finished it — and every one of them sent her a photo of their painting.

  2. 2022

    Feedback on every project

We stopped counting views and started counting finished projects. Every course got a teacher who marks your work: notes drawn on it and a short video back within five days.

  3. 2026

    12,480 students

Seven schools and eight teachers who still do the work every week, and a growing pile of finished paintings, tables, dinners and short films.

What we believe

  1. Rule 01

    Learn by making

Every course ends in something real you keep — a painting, a table, a short film. Watching is only half of it.

  2. Rule 02

    Short lessons

6 to 15 minutes each, filmed close and from above, so you can watch one and then go and do it.

  3. Rule 03

    Real teachers

Painters, chefs and makers who still do the work every week — not presenters reading a script.

  4. Rule 04

    Feedback, always

Send a photo of your work and your teacher marks it up: notes drawn on it and a short video back within 5 days.

Emma Walsh's project from Abstract painting: A 60 × 80 cm abstract on canvas
Project · A 60 × 80 cm abstract on canvas

I hadn't painted since school. Six weeks later one of my canvases is hanging in our hallway and people ask where I bought it.

Result: First painting sold

Short lessons I could do on the train, and a teacher who actually read my pages. I finished a story for the first time.

Result: Story published

Marco's knife lesson alone was worth it. I cook every night now and dinner takes half the time it used to.

Result: Cooks 6 nights a week

Claire Dawson's project from Woodworking at home: An oak side table
Project · An oak side table

I built a table in my garage with four hand tools. Tom's videos show every mistake before you make it.

Result: First table built

The feedback on my poster was more useful than a year of YouTube. It went to a real printer and I got the proof back.

Result: Now freelancing

I developed my first roll in the bathroom with the lights off. The lesson on metering finally made it click.

Result: 12-print series
